TRUST - Where to Test

🧪 Where to Take the TRUST Test

The TRUST (The Recreational UAS Safety Test) is a free, FAA-mandated training program. It is required for recreational drone pilots age 13 and older. It's short, unfailable, and must be completed before flying for fun.

Want to know why it matters? See Flying Just for Fun.

My Recommendation: Pilot Institute

I completed my TRUST certification through Pilot Institute and highly recommend them for several reasons:

Why I chose Pilot Institute for TRUST:

  • It's Free - Every legitimate TRUST trainer must provide the training for free
  • Streamlined experience - Clean interface, no unnecessary barriers
  • Immediate certificate - Download right after completion
  • Part of a larger ecosystem - If you decide to get further training, you're already familiar with their platform
  • No upsells during TRUST - They respect that TRUST is free and required

I've since taken several of their paid courses (including Drone Business Made Easy, and their mapping and surveying), and the quality is consistently excellent. Their TRUST course gives you a taste of their teaching style.

Pro tip: Even if you're planning to get your Part 107 commercial license, take the TRUST first. It's quick, free, and you can legally begin flying recreationally while you're studying for your commercial cert.

Other FAA-Approved TRUST Test Sites

While I personally recommend Pilot Institute based on my experience, here are other prominent FAA-approved TRUST providers. I haven't taken their courses, but they're all legitimate options recognized by the FAA:

Note: I haven't personally vetted these providers, but they're all on the FAA's official list of approved test administrators. Choose based on your comfort with their interface and approach.

What to Expect

Regardless of where you take TRUST:

  • It's completely free (required by FAA)
  • You cannot fail (it's educational, not a barrier)
  • Takes about 30 minutes
  • Certificate is valid indefinitely (but you must carry proof)
  • Available to anyone 13 or older

Remember: TRUST is only for recreational flying. If you're flying for any business purpose (even unpaid), you need a Part 107 commercial license instead.
